Creativity, AI, and the Human, Edinburgh Futures Institute
The “Creativity, AI, and the Human” cluster recognises the ubiquity of creativity in human experience and its central role in navigating the unpredictability of our futures.
Research Clusters, Edinburgh Futures Institute
We support research clusters which engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering interactions amongst academics, students and professional services staff from different fields of expertise.
Our Research clusters are groups of researchers, students and professionals who come together to work on specific themes and projects. Like our research centres and hubs, these clusters are interdisciplinary by nature, as they combine a diverse mix of disciplines and approaches . Edinburgh Futures Institute supports clusters in tackling specific problems, working on pilot projects, networking with other academic institutions as well as external partners, and organising seminars and public engagement events to engage with new audience.

The King’s Digital Futures Institute, King’s College London
Interface, (Fay Bound Alberti).
This project asks critical questions about the meanings of the human face in the past and in the present. What is a face? Why does it matter? How are digital technologies changing our relations to our faces?
Responsible AI UK (Kate Devlin).
King’s College is a partner institution in RAI UK, which is creating an ecosystem where people can feel heard and seen, even — or, perhaps, especially — when those voices come from early career researchers, from outside the academy, or when they challenge long held assumptions about what makes AI trustworthy and responsible.
Intelligent Systems for Screen Archives (Daniel Chávez Heras)
This project aims to develop critical and technical exploration of artificial intelligence technologies in the screen sector, focusing on moving image archives in the UK. It brings together five film and television archive partners across the four UK nations: National Library of Scotland, National Library of Wales, Northern Ireland Screen, North West Film Archive, and Yorkshire Film Archive, in collaboration with King’s Digital Lab, to develop the knowledge, tools, and skills required to rethink large audiovisual collections from a computational perspective.
Datatesting: Co-developing Computational Methods for Socially Evaluating Public Data Infrastructures (Jonathan Gray)
Datatesting brings together cultural, social and computational researchers to co-develop interdisciplinary methods for assessing the state of public data in relation to civil society concerns around the world.
Success for Digital Futures (Michael Marcinkowski)
The Success for Digital Futures programme is a collaboration between the Digital Futures Institute and the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences. The the two-year pilot programme invites black Year 10 school pupils from London to a series of interactive workshops at King’s. School pupils learn about topics such as digital humanities, ethics and bias, and technological developments. They also put into practice coding skills, with the support of King’s PhD students from the Department of Digital Humanities.
Edinburgh Futures Institute, The University of Edinburgh
The Scottish Preventhion Hub is a co-directed national partnership between Public Health Scotland, Police Scotland, and Edinburgh Futures Institute at the University of Edinburgh. The hub aims to take a whole-system public health approach focused on primary prevention, to support the reduction of health and wellbeing inequalities in Scotland by bringing together research, policy, evidence and practice.
Centre for Technomoral Futures
The Centre for Technomoral Futures focuses on the ethical implications of present and future advances in AI, machine learning and other data-driven technologies. It supports work and research in these areas across the Edinburgh Futures Institute, the University of Edinburgh and with a wide portfolio of partners, projects and networks.
Compassion in Financial Services Hub
The Compassion in Financial Services Hub, based at Edinburgh Futures Institiute, brings together the financial services industry, policymakers, academia, communities, and civil society with the aim of creating a more inclusive, sustainable, and compassionate financial system. By exploring pathways to operationalise the concept of compassion in financial services, the Hub has the ambition to address systemic challenges while unlocking new opportunities for innovation and long-term success.
Centre for Net-Zero High Density Buildings
Based at Edinburgh Futures Institute, the Centre for Net-Zero High Density Buildings is supported by £4.5 million in funding from UK Research and Innovation. The centre aims to transform the way urban buildings (tenements, flats, and commercial properties) are designed, retrofitted and maintained so that they are more energy-efficient, affordable to heat, and sustainable for future occupants.
